The Sony A7RV is a full frame, 61 megapixel mirrorless camera for photography and video. In my first portrait portrait photography session with the A7RV I tested it out for a fashion brand photoshoot. For this portrait photoshoot, I am using natural light only and shot all the images with the Sony 24-70 GM II.
The Sony a7RV while being a full-frame mirrorless camera, the image quality of the 61 megapixel files feels more like a medium format camera. The raw files have so much dynamic range and you can really push the look in the color grading process without introducing noise or color shifting at all, which is extremely impressive. This was an overcast day, however with the a7rv’s dynamic range I could push so much more warmth and vibrance into the files to make it almost seem as if we were shooting in a bright, sunny day.
The Sony A7RV’s 61 megapixel obviously makes it a really great camera for fashion photography. There are moments where having that extra detail and sharpness really gives you an edge in post to be able to add extra emphasis on small details. A clothing brand clearly isn’t just focused on how the model looks, but also how their clothing products ultimately look. The fact that you can crop 200% easily in post to really punch in and show details like zippers and fabric textures just makes this camera such a incredible tool.
Overall my first impressions after using the Sony A7RV on my first portrait photoshoot has left me extremely impressed! The 61 megapixels that gives you so much detail and room to crop, the dynamic range that allows you to push the colors and tones to new levels, and the camera’s improved autofocus and overall function makes it the best current hybrid mirrorless camera for photographers and filmmakers!
